Casein and Milk Paint Recipes
Casein or milk paints have a long history of use, particularly in America. Throughout the ages, artists and artisans have used casein paints to color paintings, furniture, murals, and more.
What is casein paint?
Casein paints are hard-wearing, inexpensive, easy to make paints that provide a perfect base for pigments. By mixing milk protein, or casein, with an alkali, a strong binder is produced that adheres itself and pigments to the surface it is painted on.Milk paints produce a flat, matte finish and work well as a non-toxic painting solution for walls, woodwork, and more. Like lime coatings, their look can be further enhanced by topcoats such as oil or wax. Highly favored for artist and craftwork, milk paints are very versatile and work well for a variety of faux finishing techniques such as washes, sponging, and ragging.
